When I work with new clients, some of the most frequently asked questions revolve around what exactly it is that I do.
Even long standing clients have difficulty describing to friends, family, and loved ones what it is that happens in treatment sessions.
How Does Myofascial Release Create Space In The Body?
The short answer is, I find things that aren’t moving that should be (myofascial restrictions), and apply specific pressures into those areas of restriction for specific periods of time. This allows tissues that have been solidified, stuck, glued, and dehydrated to begin to soften, melt, lengthen, open, and change.
In short, I am helping create space in the body.
Often this is simply space for tissues to begin to be able to heal.

As you might imagine, stuck, glued, restricted, and dehydrated tissues are not very healthy.
As tissues begin to get the space needed to heal and glide again, space is also created for the body to begin to self correct.
Myofascial restrictions compress, scrunch, twist, and pull bones out of alignment, ultimately causing the body to not feel or work too well.
Space in the body is needed for this scrunching, twisting, and misalignment to ease. The body actually can start to self correct when there is sufficient space for bones, muscles, ligaments, organ, and cells to function properly.
Healthy myofascial tissue is essential for this proper functioning.
Those are just the structural benefits of John Barnes Myofascial Release, though.

How Does Myofascial Release Create Space In The Mind And Being?
The benefits of myofascial release can go far beyond a physical body that moves and feels better.
There is no separation between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being. When it comes to the body and being, everything truly is connected.

In my work as a John Barnes Myofascial Release therapist, I work with the ENTIRETY of the being.
The access point into the entirety of the being simply happens to be the myofascial system.
Try this simple practice to get a feel for tightness -vs- space in your own body
As I work with solidified tissues and as the body begins to move and feels better, there is a corresponding space created for a new way of being.
Often, this starts with space for new thoughts to come into existence. Imagine what might be possible when all of one’s energy and focus is not consumed simply by the effort of managing pain and activities of daily living!
Many clients find insights as they get curious about their experiences in their body. They find metaphors and meaning in the words they use to describe their physical, lived experience.
Recently, one client described how she had become aware of how difficult stillness was for her.
And, perhaps, find a different way.
She came into her session with the intention to feel more into stillness.
And, as she did, she had a sudden insight that she has been taught that stillness is laziness.
Being aware of this now, she has an opportunity to challenge this culturally held belief.
What Might Space In The Body, Mind, And Being Feel Like?
The depth of healing possibilities really start to open up when clients ask this sort of question and explore what is underneath sensations of pain or discomfort in the body.
For some, it comes as a surprise to find lightness, not only in the body, but also lightness in the heart, mind, and brain.
It is a lightness many have not felt, even after years of talk therapy and counseling.
Often, it is family members or friends who notice this lightness first. Who notice that things are changing in the one they love, and wonder about what they see and feel.
Working with a John Barnes trained myofascial expert can lead to space to feel. Space to breathe. Space for self.
It can help create space to question, doubt, be curious, and explore.

Myofascial release can create space to be. Without effort, without trying, without thought.
Sometimes this sense of space is experienced in treatment sessions. Sometimes it is experienced in at home self treatment.
Regardless of where and how it happens, more space in the body is ultimately what allows healing to happen.
